About Karina
They say everybody has a book in them; my first, when I was 27 years old was a Times bestseller. I wrote another three and I am writing my fifth. I started with an idea, no connections and no computer. Free time was short – I was raising two small children, I was going to college and I was working. However, I was determined and I believed. I knew what I was writing about. I wanted to make a difference and my work as an author, a journalist and a publisher of non-fiction, has enabled me to do that.

I live in south Dublin and I have worked as a journalist for the past 20 years and as a magazine publisher and editorial director for six. I am the author of: Trust Betrayed: How the Organ Retention Scandal Devastated Irish FamiliesHear My Silence: Overcoming Depression; You Have to Scream with Your Mouth ShutViolence in the Home and If It Happens To YouMiscarriage and Stillbirth – A Human Insight. I contribute widely to broadcast media, both television and radio and write extensively for newspapers and magazines on my specialist areas of health and social issues. I have facilitated editorial workshops for an international audience and I teach non-fiction writing classes and tutor online. I am a psychology graduate and also a commercial editorial and communications consultant.

TESTIMONIALS

“Assiduous in her pursuit of information, Colgan established some details which make difficult reading….

“This harrowing and emotive book reveals the full story behind the scandal, with individual stories of bereaved families and their struggle for the truth, the blasé attitude displayed by doctors, the lack of cooperation from hospitals who fought all the way to the courts…

“Although many in the medical profession were obstructive, Colgan does acknowledge the doctors and politicians who were understanding and helpful to her when she was researching this book. She provides information and some comfort for families who wish to make enquiries themselves and there is even a response from Pope Benedict on the scandal...”
Irish Independent

“… Three ministers for health are criticised for not achieving full accountability and refusing to be interviewed for this book… The hurt comes off the pages in the wrenching stories of parents reprising the grief of loss, often years after it has happened. These will remain with the reader when the twists and turns of how society tried to assuage the grief of the wronged families – and manifestly failed to do so – are forgotten.”
Irish Times

“Karina is a journalist and author of Trust Betrayed: How the Organ Retention Scandal Devastated Irish Families. She has argued that once the truth came out, the official response only made matters worse rather than better…

“It was only when the Alder Hey organ scandal broke in Britain in 1999 that people like Karina began to question whether hospitals in Ireland were keeping tissues and organs of deceased infants and children without authorisation from the parents…”
Irish Examiner

“… It is the ignorance and injustice underlying this stigmatisation that has impelled the well-known and acclaimed Irish journalist Karina Colgan to write about depression in her latest book, Hear My Silence. Explaining her decision, she says: "The reasons I would choose not to write it are the very reasons that depression is the epidemic and silent illness it is today. I was in a position to put a face to depression... In so doing, Karina Colgan will have given courage to many who are too desolate, frightened and lonely to speak of their bleak pain. ”
Patricia Casey, Author & Prof. Psychiatry, UCD

"To describe Karina Colgan's work as a journalist, editor, author and business associate in anything less than superlactives, would fail to do her justice..."
Brendon Colvert, International Police Association
